This video demos a concept from Time inc. for a digital magazine for a multitouch slate or tablet. I like the way that headlines have been treated more like film credits. The whole package feels like it would be a very compelling and satisfying experience. The synchronisation of games with realtime events, eg a sporting event combined with a game where you predict results is an interesting innovation.
The concept includes facebook sharing, using soft keyboard, galleries which expand out of image in article, the ability to flick through a carousel of all pages, dynamic advertising and video features.
They say this content will be available mid 2010. I want it!

As all becomes more complex to make, I find myself drawn to the elegant simplicity of these Japanese Stereoviews - the 2 images pf the stereoview turned into an animated gif, to bring jerky but oddly compelling 3d to the computer screen. See more at Pink tentacle
1 month agoThe whooping, big wooden tables, genius bar… must be a mac store - oh its not - Microsoft tries to entice shoppers into the first of their 2 shops by pretending it’s an Apple store.. having to run such a long gauntlet of employees, I fear I’d lash out…perhaps they’re there to prevent people who thought they WERE at an Apple store opening from leaving. via Electronista

The best carpark payment machine. The green slot for the ticket, then your card. It tells you what it’s debiting then spits out card, ticket and receipt. No buttons to press, and all done with a gentle hiss and whirr. Barbican carpark.

2 months ago“Imagine the day when you can read your newspaper on your home computer” c 1981 (Thanks to Magculture) heck, it only took 2 hours to download the whole paper. Note the ad which shows newspaper layout, v the reality of green-screen text. Good to look back and see what pioneering looked like. And pioneering work continues, only the screens are smaller, full colour and beautifully detailed, and instead of having to hook your phone into an audio coupler (he takes a moment to check the phone is securely hooked up) today’s pioneers let you read the paper on your phone!

2 months agoSo have Apple, through their app store and iphone, managed to devise a platform on which a whole new set of business models can be built? Using the internet and phone networks on mobile things, having a viable way for people to buy useful - or seriously fun software - in numbers which can grow a developer network, and create a new branch to the long tail… not to mention the fact that payment models are built in, and producers are free to devise new ones.. up to a point.
There’s a very interesting shift going on here…
Right, must work - will think more about it another time

Buses wedged on Waterloo bridge… But only for 10mins

The Guardian’s G2 has been re-designed, with centred text quietly infiltrating the front index and the very elegant Arts front… all part of demonstrating a liberal voice? I like it, and here are my other favourite bits: Small type in “shortcuts” subject straps is a nice touch, as are the subtle, stackable webtrails and information slugs at the end of articles. It is sad to see illustration on the retreat - a sign of the tightened times perhaps. Congratulations to Richard and all concerned on keeping G2 fresh!
